Phone Fell in Water? Here's Exactly What to Do (And What NOT to Do)

Whether it slipped into the pool, got caught in the rain, or took a dive into the Ionian Sea near Sarandë — water damage is one of the most common emergencies we handle at K2J Tech. The first 30 minutes are absolutely critical.

Here's our step-by-step emergency guide, followed by what professional repair looks like.

Step 1: Get It Out Immediately

Every second counts. The longer your phone stays submerged, the deeper the water penetrates. Grab it out immediately — don't worry about getting your hands wet.

Step 2: Turn It OFF

This is the single most important step. Do not try to check if it still works. If the phone is on, power it down immediately. If it's already off, leave it off. Electricity + water = short circuits that destroy components permanently.

Do NOT Do These Things

Don't try to charge it. Don't press buttons repeatedly. Don't use a hair dryer (heat damages components). Don't put it in rice (this is a myth — rice dust can cause more damage).

Step 3: Remove What You Can

  • Take out the SIM card and memory card immediately
  • Remove the case
  • If your phone has a removable battery, take it out
  • Open any port covers or flaps

Step 4: Dry the Exterior

Use a soft cloth or paper towel to gently pat dry every surface. Pay special attention to ports (charging, headphone jack, speakers). Tilt the phone in different directions to let water drain out of openings.

Step 5: Bring It to K2J Tech

The internal damage is what matters, and that requires professional tools. At K2J Tech, our water damage recovery process includes:

  1. Complete disassembly — we open the phone to access all internal components
  2. Ultrasonic cleaning — specialized cleaning removes hidden corrosion and mineral deposits
  3. Component inspection — we check every chip, connector, and flex cable for damage
  4. Replacement of damaged parts — any corroded or short-circuited components are replaced
  5. Thorough testing — we test every function before giving it back

Fresh Water vs. Salt Water

Fresh water (pool, rain, washing machine) is generally easier to recover from. The damage is primarily electrical short circuits.

Salt water (sea, ocean) is much more aggressive. Salt causes rapid corrosion of metal contacts and can destroy components within hours. If your phone fell in the sea near Sarandë, time is critical — bring it to us as fast as possible.

Success Rate

At K2J Tech, we successfully recover approximately 70-80% of water-damaged phones when they're brought to us within 24 hours. The faster you act, the better the odds.

Prevention Tips

  • Use a waterproof case when near water (we sell them at our store)
  • Keep your phone in a ziplock bag at the beach
  • Avoid using your phone in the bathroom — steam causes damage too
  • Check your phone's IP rating — even "water resistant" phones have limits
